A Maternity Session Bursting with Urban Colors - Candice + Charlie

Some of my favorite people in the world are welcoming their baby into the universe, and I got to work with them to photograph this sweet and beautiful moment. They wanted color graffiti as their backdrop, so out we went to find the plethora of Asheville graffiti hot spots. So many to choose from, so many that were painted over, and an entire building with one we wanted wasn’t even there anymore; a testament to the ever changing landscape of our fair city. But we still got some great ones!

Candice and Charlie have a magical chemistry between them. It’s never hard to photograph them; just point in their general direction and shoot! Seriously! They just gravitate towards one another and look gorgeous in anything they do. And to top it all, they have a quirky and funny side as well. Case in point, the many antics that ensued while visiting our many locations. After being married almost 13 years myself, humor is a blessing in any relationship! A great spice to life. Thanks Candice and Charlie for letting me into so many wonderful and important moments in your life.

Can’t wait to meet the little one. I am going to get all my baby cuddle time in, so watch out guys. It’s on! Many happy wishes and loving prayers comin’ at ya for your journey ahead.

Vintage Glamour in Downtown Asheville- Juliette + Keevon at Rennaissance Hotel

Downtown Asheville is a beautiful and eclectic metropolis, both with a modern edge and breathtaking scenic views from all angles. Our real life couple, Juliette and Keevon, were a perfect fit for this downtown wedding.  We picked TWO fabulous dresses for Juliette at Wedding Inspirations Bridal Boutique; a wedding dress that fit like a glove with a gorgeous, dramatic train, AND a beaded, fringe reception dress giving a nod to the roaring twenties for the after party. It was great that they had so much selection at the same store; Wedding dresses, mother of the bride, some wedding party, reception dresses, flower girl dresses, robes and so many jewelry and accessories. This is my first styled shoot I’ve done with a reception dress and I definitely plan to do it again. I loved having a whole second look to play with and Juliette and Keevon had fun pretending they were in the “kick-back party time” segment of the wedding day.

For Keevon, we fitted a classic black and white tux from Mitchell’s Tuxedos. Kathy is a genius and picked out the perfect look for him.  And he looked SO handsome in it! Some men were just born to wear tuxes. For the second look, with something this classic, we just lost the bow tie and partied on into the night.

A special touch to our couple’s photo shoot was a 1955 Bel Air classic car, bringing an old Hollywood feel. Burrell Vintage Cars parked it right outside the hotel, and we couldn’t stop clicking away. For couples who want a special touch, you can’t go wrong with a classic car! The pictures from that part of the day had such an amazing flair because of the beauty of that car paired with this gorgeous couple.

From the super chic lobby to the top floor views of the mountains and surrounding city, The Renaissance Hotel was the perfect venue for our shoot.  For couples who have lots of out of town guests, a large amount of guests who might range in age or needs , or people who just love amenities, a hotel wedding is a perfect choice. Renaissance Hotel is also a dog friendly hotel, making this a perfect destination for dog lovers. You can do everything from your bachelorette pool party or bridal shower, to rehearsal dinner, to wedding and reception, even the morning after breakfast; with a hotel wedding, it’s all in one spot. And as a wedding videographer and photographer here in Asheville, I can speak from experience that it’s nice to have that capability. And not to get rained out LOL.

We really enjoyed showing such a wide range of moments with our couple; from sweet and cuddly overlooking the sunset, to edgy and editorial in front of the RH bookshelf.   We had the best; the venue, the amazing flowers and chic cake, the FABULOUS dresses and tux, a one of a kind classic car, not to mention award winning hair and make-up, and the sweetest, cutest couple. Thank you to everyone for your passion and creativity. This wedding styled shoot will be hard to top!

Special thanks to Christine at Renaissance for taking care of us all day, and Silvio for such a beautifully decorated table!

Karyn and Kyle- A Playful and Loving Wedding at Highland Lake

Karyn and Kyle were by far my most playful and fun couple of the season. I was so excited that they chose me to be their wedding photographer. They didn’t want a big to do. So it was a day that was all about family and concentrated on the simple ceremony that started it all.

A beautiful handmade wooden arbor was center stage in front of the lake at Highland Lake Cove in Flat Rock. The color had just started bursting, with orange, yellow, and a little bit of red sparkling like fireworks in the tree tops. While Karyn was getting ready with Mom and other family, flower girls were princessing around with silver crowns and practicing for their procession. And that’s how it all began. The little gents came bearing rings, and flower girls sprinkled their petals paving the way for the beautiful bride. After her dad walked her down the aisle, he imparted some special words to her, whispering in her ear, causing surprising tears to flow. It was a special moment for sure. Her brother facilitated the nuptials, vows were exchanged, and rings were given. Time for cake and champagne!

We went out in the autumn leaves for bride and groom pics, out by the lake for some tender moments, and ended it all with a bridal piggy back ride back to the venue. It wasn’t in our original plan to do more photos but when Karyn and Kyle told me they wanted some photos downtown and there was ALSO a mural that was really important to them, I felt like it was just super important to capture it. Especially once I saw the pic of their favorite mural. “Play Every Day” I mean it doesn’t get any better then that! When you’re a wedding photographer, and you are blessed with a couple that wants to do crazy, fun things….you take every advantage!

So our downtown bride and groom photo session was born! Starting at the mural, then going to some crosswalks on the way to downtown center. On the way back, I was inspired by Karyn wearing her new hubbies jacket and the secret flask that was brought out. I gave them the idea, and the Tossing Bouquet in the Air Like A Rockstar photo was born. It was so EPIC!

Thank you to Karyn and Kyle for going along with my crazy photo ideas. And for being so loving and vulnerable in your bride and groom portrait session. It was an honor to be your wedding photographer. And even though you wanted a small ceremony with no fuss, no muss, you still valued capturing these special moments with photography. I wish you many joyful and playful years ahead. Enjoy each other and remember to PLAY EVERY DAY!

There were so many family photos I had put in a slideshow.

Because it was just family at the ceremony, we took plenty of extra time capturing everyone together. YAY for family photos!

Angela + Katie - Seasons on Love at Oglebay

I felt SO honored to be able to take part in this wedding between Katie and Angela.  I was privileged enough to photograph their engagement session when they were here visiting Asheville last year.  We really had a great time.  Super early shoot in Dupont State Forest where the mist was rising off the water at Hoooker Falls, making it so ethereal.  We laughed about coming up with poses and then abandoning those poses to play and have fun, showing off their love style in the setting of the fall leaves.  It’s always the best when I get to have an engagement session with a couple. #1 you get to know them which I think allows for better photographs, and #2 We learn how to communicate in “photo speak”.  Meaning I get to learn what works and what doesn’t, good sides to the camera, angles, and verbal cues that work best with our flow.  So ALL that aside, let’s just say we had a blast and I was bummed when their wedding was out of town and I wasn’t going to be their wedding photographer. HOWEVER, the stars aligned and I was able to fit them in, between my FOUR other weddings in September! And traveled out to work with them on this SUPER special day!  (Some of our amazing engagement session is here for you to peruse as well!)

The venue was really nice, and I have to say, the deer walking around was like magic. Since I was staying there I got to meet and help out a lot of the family during rehearsal, setting up the venue, and snapping some pics of the festivities. It was nice to see it all happening before the official day. The wedding day was perfect! Weather was perfect and the temperature decided to take a nice dip so we were all cool and loving it. Angela made Katie cry when she sent her a beautiful ring with a compass on it during her early morning makeup session. Katie said, “That’s three already today!” And that’s how the morning went. It was one sentimental loving moment to the next. These two ladies just couldn’t wait to get married! The love was infectious and so wonderful to witness.

Katie surprised Angela with a “Seasons of Love” serenade from the group during the ceremony. It’s one of Angela’s favorite songs, and it held a deep meaning which played in well with the ceremony. Bubbles and applause carried the newly married couple out of the ceremony, and Mrs. and Mrs. Dunn started their lives together as one forever. We partied on into the night, sharing epic dances (yes, there was Uptown Funk as Father/Daughter Dance!) and many, many loving kisses stolen between the new couple.

Thank you again Angela and Katie for bringing me on this journey with you as your engagement photographer and THEN your wedding photographer. I was so happy to be there and see it all unfold. May these memories bring you endless joy through the years, as you share this amazing life together. I wish you a wonderful Season of Love!

Wedding Day 2018

I don’t think I’ll ever get a Bride hand feeding a deer again. It was so magical and fit with the day so well. This resort is home to A LOT of deer that are extremely friendly as you can see.

I literally almost fell on top of her while I was holding my hands out and shielding her from view and she was crouching in the grass. It was crazy and made for a laughable moment we got to talk about later on. And NO, Angela did not see her!

My first wedding in the round! This was really cool and made a very intimate and special circle around these two special people tying the knot.

Candice and Charlie Maternity Session- The Hunt For Flowers & Ferns

Candice and Charlie are some of my favorite clients and people!  From head shots, to wedding photography, to maternity photo shoots, and soon....baby photography!  I've photographed their lives and watched as it's all progressed.  I feel so honored to have been there for these momentous occasions and captured it for them to relive forever.

Candice knew she wanted flowers and ferns.  Having pre-hiked Pink Beds in Pisgah and seeing field upon field of wild flowers and sunflowers, we planned to go there the following week.  Unfortunately in that time all the flowers got murdered!  Actually mowed down, you could see nothing but empty, mowed fields.  It was odd!  We continued hiking for about an hour finding some ferns and made the best of the natural forest.

Just so happened that it's sunflower season at Biltmore!  So when I saw these amazing fields during a run I knew we had to do a whole new shoot just for fun.  I just knew she wanted flowers, especially sunflowers for her vision.  And so we got our flowers, finally.

The world is about to be + 2 amazing, caring and super loving parents and +1 lucky baby boy.  I can't wait to meet him.  Congratulations on your amazing next chapter you two!

A Roaring Product Shoot

I love fashion photography and product photography, so when I get to work with a designer or a store to help feature their clothing it's a treat for my creative soul.  Coming up with the concept, figuring out how and what to feature, finding models and creative team, location scouting...it's a lot of planning but when it comes together it's magic.

I'd worked with Va Va Vooom a few years ago and was so honored to do another project with them.  I saw a grey, silk lingerie jumper in their store that inspired the whole shoot, the roaring 20's.  I wanted fur, silk, jewels, champagne and sexy strong women to show off this amazing and iconic time period, my dear models, Jillian Summers and Emma Dubin.

We were able to use the Crow and Quill for a shooting space, which worked out so perfectly.  After scouting through various locations that didn't quite fit, I went there for drinks one night and fell in love with their eclectic furniture selections and vintage wallpaper backdrop.  You just can't stage this stuff!

Thank you to my amazing team that came together on Easter to make this happen!! If you haven't worked with any of them, you're missing out! Check them out here in town.  I adore them!!

Studio Misha Featured in Sophie Magazine for Jan/Feb 2018

I still get giddy when I see myself in print! It's such an honor and I don't think I'll ever get over the feeling of it.

Sophie Magazine did a feature on the most recent Fashmob X-Something Simple.  Three of my photos were chosen to be included, one of them making the back Photo Finish full page feature!  SO cool.

If you've never been to or heard of Fashmob, basically it's a event where photographers, models, designers, stylists, and artists all converge to photograph and play with fashion.  Lots of local designers and boutiques get involved and team up with models, make up artists, and hair stylists to put together looks for models.  Then they walk around and wait to be discovered and photographed.

It's almost like a fashion scavenger hunt.  Sometimes I'm walking around on the street looking for stylish people and asking them, "Are you a model?"  This gets me some strange looks if they happen to NOT be part of Fashmob.  But there's no way to tell sometimes!! There are some pretty fashionable, gorgeous people around town. Anyway, when you meet up with a participant, you create magic for a few clicks and then on to the next.

I always enjoy doing this event for many reasons: It gets me out of my comfort zone of talking to and meeting people I don't know, I get to work with new people I never might have met otherwise, and you really have to be spontaneous! You find someone, and have to look around for a place that works.  There's no preset lighting or studio setting. The CITY IS YOUR STUDIO NOW!

So enjoy my Sophie article and some other photos from the event I've included as well.  And if you're an amateur photographer or model, consider checking out the next Fashmob Event!

Golden Light and the Bluebird

I recently teamed up with jewelry designer Jessica Hall of Bluebird Design to do a summer product shoot for her latest jewelry line.  Our vision of lace, boho fashions with a light, summery feel was the perfect pairing for her colorful, handcrafted jewelry, highlighting birds and silver feathers in earrings, bracelets and necklaces.  She wanted to show that the pieces were simple enough to be worn on their own, or could be fashioned with multiple strands of contrasting styles and colors for a fun, chic look.

First we started at a fun little picnic with vintage books and tea cups I've been collecting from antique shops over the years. Then we caught the last of the golden light in some grassy fields on top of a hill overlooking the mountain side, and danced to a jazzy playlist on someone's iphone in the distance.  We laughed as we made a mad dash towards the end to get all the pieces in before the sun went behind the mountain.  I've never seen the sun so golden.  Thank you to Jessica, Coco and Emma for a wonderful day!  You ladies are amazing.
